AMERICAN GOTHIC / WHAT A TRIP (Wood/Martineau) - Mixed Media Digital Download
In 2020-2021 I took familiar art pieces and reframed them as familiar moments in Biblical history while contemplating human emotion, trauma, and global events of the past. Inspired by the pose and emotion in each original artwork, I "changed the narrative" by using mixed media (fabric, beads, paint, ephemera) to create a new, creatively embellished but historically respectful, portrait.
This portrait is of Noah's Ark. I used paper illustrations from Peter Spier's book "Noah's Ark" in the background and paint with glitter dripping to create a rainbow that reflects on the holographic textile on Noah and his unnamed wife. The trauma of living thru a world wiped out is seen on their faces. Noah holds a grape vine in his hand, focused on the need to cope by using substances to dull the memory and escape the reality.
Life is suffering
Love is the desire to see unnecessary suffering ameliorated
Truth is the handmaiden of love
Dialogue is the pathway to truth
Humility is recognition of personal insufficiency and the willingness to learn
To learn is to die voluntarily and be born again, in great ways and small
So speech must be untrammeled
So that dialogue can take place
So that we can all humbly learn
So that truth can serve love
So that suffering can be ameliorated
So that we can all stumble forward to the Kingdom of God
